Chalazion / stye / চোখে অঞ্জনি
A bump or lump on the eyelid is a common condition that can be caused by various factors. These lumps can appear suddenly, often causing discomfort or concern, but most are not serious and can be treated with basic care.
Common Causes of a Lump on the Eyelid:
⦁ Stye (স্টাই):
⦁ A stye is one of the most common causes of a lump on the eyelid. It occurs when the sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands) in the eyelid become infected, usually by bacteria (Staphylococcus).
⦁ Symptoms: A painful, red bump near the edge of the eyelid, sometimes with pus.
⦁ Treatment: Warm compresses, antibacterial ointments, and in some cases, drainage by a healthcare provider.
⦁ Chalazion (চালাজিয়ন):
⦁ A chalazion is similar to a stye, but it occurs when the oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked and swollen. Chalazia are usually not painful and can grow larger over time.
⦁ Symptoms: A painless, round lump in the middle or upper part of the eyelid. It may become red or swollen.
⦁ Treatment: Warm compresses, gentle massage of the eyelid, and sometimes, surgical removal if the lump doesn’t go away on its own.
⦁ Milia (মিলিয়া):
⦁ Milia are small, white cysts that can form under the skin, often on the eyelid or around the eyes. These are generally harmless and occur when keratin (a protein in the skin) becomes trapped in a hair follicle.
⦁ Symptoms: Small, white, raised bumps on the eyelid.
⦁ Treatment: Milia usually resolve on their own, but they can be removed by a dermatologist if they persist or cause concern.
⦁ Cyst (সিস্ট):
⦁ An eyelid cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can develop in the oil glands of the eyelid. These cysts can vary in size and may or may not be painful.
⦁ Symptoms: A painless, movable lump beneath the eyelid skin. The cyst may be soft or firm.
⦁ Treatment: Warm compresses can help in some cases, but if the cyst is large or persistent, surgical removal may be necessary.
⦁ Hordeolum (হোর্ডিয়োলাম):
⦁ A hordeolum is another term for a stye. It is a localized infection of the hair follicle at the base of the eyelashes, typically caused by a bacterial infection.
⦁ Symptoms: Redness, tenderness, and a pimple-like bump on the edge of the eyelid.
⦁ Treatment: Similar to stye treatment, involving warm compresses, antibiotics, and drainage if needed.
⦁ Infection or Abscess (ইনফেকশন বা আবসেস):
⦁ An abscess is a collection of pus caused by bacterial infection. An abscess in the eyelid can cause swelling, pain, and redness.
⦁ Symptoms: Swelling, redness, pain, and sometimes fever.
⦁ Treatment: Requires medical attention for proper drainage and antibiotics.
⦁ Allergic Reactions (অ্যালার্জিক প্রতিক্রিয়া):
⦁ Allergies to dust, pollen, or makeup can cause swelling and the formation of lumps on the eyelids. The eyelids may also become itchy and watery.
⦁ Symptoms: Redness, swelling, and itching around the eyes.
⦁ Treatment: Antihistamines and avoiding the allergen. A cold compress can also help reduce swelling.
⦁ Tumors (টিউমার):
⦁ Though rare, benign or malignant tumors can develop in the eyelid. These lumps may be painless or cause discomfort, and they may require more extensive treatment.
⦁ Symptoms: A growing lump, often painless, which may be firm or hard.
⦁ Treatment: Biopsy, removal, and further treatment depending on whether the tumor is benign or cancerous.
